It was a good experience to read so many of Chekhov's short stories one after another over the course of a week or so. I could not escape the themes of the futility of life, the yearning for meaning in life, and the sense of being an insignificant person in a vast bureaucracy. Chekhov's writing is often subtle, yet it evokes an emotional response and compassion in the reader. I especially enjoyed A Doctor's Visit, one of the author's many stories about doctors. A doctor is summoned to a distant province to treat an heiress for vague complaints with no apparent causes. He looks condescending upon the family and the factory town, and loses patience with the heiress and the family. But "one day he sees a soft, suffering expression" on the young woman's face, "which was intelligent and touching: she seemed to him altogether graceful, feminine and simple, and he longed to soothe her, not with drugs, not with advice, but with simple kindly words." It transforms his attitude, and he sees her as a valuable human being, rather than a bored provincial heiress. Each of the stories in this collection are worth reading for their glimpses into human nature, and the time of Chekhov.

The Lady With The Dog And Other Stories Anton Pavlovich Chekhov Constance Garnett 9781277110388 Books Reviews

I am happy that these bilingual books are offered but I noticed that slowly the paragraphs became longer and longer before one would see the translation which makes it more difficult to go back and check on one or two words. I checked out dictionaries but how is one to type or paste the Russian word one would like to be translated and yes it would be wonderful if one could just click on a word and then be able to read the definition.
Zinaida Fyodorovna, Kukushkin, George Ivanitch, are not names that easily roll from our English-speaking tongues, but they are some of the believable characters who come to life through the words of this brilliant author. I felt most deeply the pain, raw emotions, as relationships were formed and lost or conflicted. Different culture, time and place, worthy of a read.
This is written from the Russian perspective of a person living long ago. People were tightly controlled by government and society as well. There are many stories in this book and the endings leave the reader with an imagination of how the story might end or how they wish it to end.
I must say these stories do stretch ones mind which is good to do.
Thank you for this book and the stories inside. I shall read it again sometime.
Chekhov's stories take place in a world with fixed rules for human behavior, but find infinite variety in the relationships of men and women, adults and children.
It's Chekhov, one of the most honored Russian writers. Usually known as a play write but is consider one of the best writers of short stories of all time. Well know for his play The Cherry Tree and The Seagull. This book is a find and bought for a good price, a real bargainv
I like to read for a bit when I go to bed and have thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories translated, I believe from Russian. Some of the stories seem to end abruptly, as if Checkov had not completely resolved the story or it was to be a part of something else. Even this didn't detract from the characters he developed and the stories told.
Anton Chekhov has written a host of short stories which mirror everyday life in Nineteenth Century Russia. His themes range from infidelity which leads to true love as in The Lady with the Dog to an overbearing father who negatively impacts the entire family in Head of the Household. Vexation and doom are placed on a man’s life after meeting the legendary Black Monk. In The Upheaval, a well-educated governess is humiliated when accused of stealing a family brooch while in Volodya, a teen takes his own life because of deep feelings of inadequacy. In The Husband, a tax-collector successfully crushes his wife’s joy and makes her feel as unhappy as he feels on a regular basis. Lastly, the lengthy An Anonymous Story focuses on a young married woman who leaves her marriage for romance and it turns out tragically. Chekhov is a delightful writer who causes all readers to ponder life itself.
